Burlington is a small community when compared with nearby Toronto, but judged against many other towns and cities in Ontario it is actually quite large. It is big enough to be labeled a "city" in its own right rather than just a town. However, due to its proximity to Toronto its primary function as a community is to serve as a residential suburb for workers of the larger metropolis. Though Burlington does offer some economic and employment opportunities for its residents in the high tech and small industry sectors, the vast majority of people in Burlington commute to Toronto for work but prefer not to pay out the nose for Condos for Rent Toronto. The GO train system with connects Burlington with downtown Toronto makes this commute fairly easy and painless. For public transit within the city, residents rely on Burlington Transit buses.
Although diversity is on its way up in Burlington and the rest of Ontario, the population of Burlington overwhelmingly identifies themselves as White and Christian according to the last census. Over 90% of people listed themselves as White and 78% identified their religious affiliation as Christian. The largest minority group was South Asian, at 3.1% of the population. Other minority groups such as African-Canadian and Chinese were less than 2%. So if you were hoping to work with a Chinese real estate agent, Toronto proper is still your best bet.
As a community Burlington is fairly tight-knit despite the number of people coming through each day to visit the big-box malls. Burlington residents enjoy hiking and picnicking in over 800 acres of parkland distributed over 75 parks, the largest being Spencer Smith Park. Burlington also has a natural harbor with a beach on the lake which would make Toronto condominium developers drool with envy. You would need a lot more active exchange traded funds to afford these views in downtown Toronto.
There is a lot of involvement in school and community programs both from students and adults. The Burlington Teen Tour Band "Redcoats" marching band has toured all over the world and accepts musicians from ages 13 to 21. It has an affiliate, the Junior Redcoats, which is made up of children from 9 to 12 and acts as a feeder for the teen band like Aurora water pumps draw water from a well to feed the sink.
