Community

The municipality of Clarington is not an actual town or city. There is no single community that bears the name of Clarington, rather, Clarington is the name given to a collection of towns and rural villages in the Durham Region of Ontario. Clarington towns and villages are located about 30-45 mins from the downtown Toronto townhouses by rail or car.

The name "Clarington" is derived from joining "Clarke" and "Darlington", two historical names for townships in the area, into one word. The name Clarington replaces the old name for the municipality: Township of Newcastle, which was confusing because Newcastle is one of the towns included in the municipality but the municipality was headquartered in the larger town of Bowmanville.

Residents of Clarington towns and villages most often find employment outside of the municipality by commuting via GO train or car to either nearby Oshawa or Toronto or making houses in Whitby. Employers in the municipality of Clarington include the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, the Goodyear plant, the foundary, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Headquarters, and various shipping/receiving companies that operate out of the deep water marina. All of these ventures are in the municipality's largest town, Bowmanville.

Recreationally, Clarington is a semi-rural community and thus its residents have a lot of access to parks and outdoor sporting areas. They don't spend a lot of time worrying about the current gold or silver prices on the world market, but hockey is popular, as there are several full-sized rinks in the area and numerous hockey teams from professional minor leagues to recreational leagues catering to players of all ages.

The town of Orono draws in over 25,000 people yearly for its Durham County Fair and Ontario Rodeo Finals. Everyone from stock brokers to Ajax real estate agents show up to watch competitors compete in all the traditional rodeo activities, plus equestrian events. Orono has also been the site of filming for several movies and TV shows, including David Cronenberg's "The Dead Zone" and the CBC series "Wind at My Back."
