Education

The schooling in Ajax and the rest of Durham County is spit between its Catholic roots and the more modern secular government system. Despite their differences they work together with more success than your average online web collaboration Residents can choose to send their children to either, as both boards are well represented by facilities and funding. Two of the five high schools in Durham County, named for Notre Dame and Archbishop Denis O'Connor, belong to the Catholic School Board. The other three, Ajax, J. Clarke Richardson, and Pickering, belong to the government. Both run a number of elementary and middle schools dispersed among Ajax's neighborhoods.

In Ajax there are programs available, both public and private, to assist in furthering the education of both adults and children. Some are offered by one or the other of the school boards, some are run by nonprofit organizations, and still others are put on by Ajax community services or the public library. They include evening classes, literacy initiatives, summer schools, and day camps and generally take place in rooms decorated with cute vinyl wall letters. Some of these programs are open to all while others cater to adults wishing to continue their education or children with special needs or learning disabilities.

There are a number of post-secondary schooling opportunities within convenient distance to Ajax as well, including the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and Durham College. Both are well-respected career training institutes that focus primarily on trades and would be an excellent place to go if you were looking to learn what Y strainers do.

The UOIT, which opened in 2003, is primarily concerned with training students to meet the needs of both small local businesses and the larger multinational corporations found closer to Toronto proper. The Institute also does a fair amount of research into what the needs of these businesses are so their students will be more desirable to executive headhunters. Their learning approach is to combine classroom teaching with practical job training. The programs they offer include: Information Technology, Nursing, Engineering, and Justice Studies.
