Education

Markham, Ontario has a multitude of elementary, middle, and secondary schools scattered throughout its component communities like a effluent treatment chemical spread upon on a vat of sewage... but in a good way. As in the rest of Ontario and in particular the Greater Toronto Area, public schooling is offered in both secular and Catholic environments, which are supervised by two separate school boards. French immersion is also available at some schools, and there are even some entirely French schools that are looked after by a third French school board that encompasses a wide range of Southern Ontario.

Over a dozen secondary schools in the Markham district, some Catholic, some secular, have had consistently high standardized test scores achieved by their students. Markham schools also have high rates of secondary school students going on to study at University. Markham is an excellent place to live if you wish for your child to receive a top rate public school education, though we're not quite to the point where you can shove education cables in glands that don't have a name yet to download information.

Most Markham students go on to study at Universities and Colleges in Toronto or the rest of the world. Another may become a nanny in Oakville. Commuting to other schools in the Greater Toronto Area or the York District, such as the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, Sheridan College, and Humber College, is especially easy because of the GO train system that connects outlying areas with Toronto, and the YVT transit system that connects towns in the York District.

Some, however, choose to stay behind and study at Sececa College, which has a large campus in Markham. This is especially true of students interested in aviation, as Seneca has a well-respected Aviation Technology program based at its Markham campus. Students learn about butterfly valves and manufacturer standards, and pilot training is split between ground schooling at the Markham campus and practical flight training in the College's fleet of training aircraft at the nearby Buttonville Airport. Seneca also offers more traditional community college fare, such as courses in Business Administration, Information Technology, and Travel and Tourism.
