The town of Ajax, as well as most of the nearby townships, is served by an amalgamated hospitals district known as the Rouge Valley Health System, which was formed out of the former town hospitals of Ajax and Scarborough in 1999. Rouge Valley Health System runs the two former community hospitals, Ajax-Pickering and Centenary, as well as a number of smaller mental health clinics. They have hundreds of health care professionals on staff including 224 family doctors, 325 specialist physicians and over 1,000 nurses, who, you'll see carrying their iPhones about in leather cases, to best serve you whenever needed.
Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering Hospital is located at 580 Harwood Street South in Ajax and provides emergency care 24 hours a day to residents of Ajax as well as the nearby communities of Pickering and Whitby. It opened in 1954 with just 38 beds. It has since modernized and expanded to include two four storey wings and now has a capacity of 144. The Hospital also provides cardiac care, diagnostic imaging and continuing care to the residents of Durham County. Lab work, including the urine drug screens required by some employers, is done in-hospital to reduce waiting times for patients needing further testing.
Like any Canadian hospital, a top position on the waiting list for the ER is worth more than silver bullion, as the hospital Emergency Department was designed to handle 20,000 patients per year but sees more than 45,000. Any person with non-emergency ailments or injuries are recommended to make an appointment with one of the over seventy practicing physicians in the area.
Should you have other medical needs, Ajax is also well represented in the areas of dentistry, sports medicine, alternative medicine and chiropractic medicine and has several medical supply stores that sell everything from diabetes test kits to bamboo diapers. These facilities exist both in town and convenient to town to serve any requirements you may have and many of them are willing to take on new patients.
