Brampton, Ontario's health care offerings once took the form of two hospitals: Peel Memorial Hospital and Brampton Civic Hospital. However, as was the trend in the late 90s, a movement began within the government to save money by cutting corners on everything from fuse holders to hospitals. In 1997 the Health Services Restructuring Committee merged Brampton hospitals with nearby Etobicoke General Hospital and Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital into the various campuses of the William Ostler Heath Care Center.
Today Peel Memorial Hospital is closed for renovations and it is unclear when, if ever it will shed its compliment of contractors with Motorola leather pouches and reopen. Residents feel the facility would best serve the community by remaining a center for emergency and acute care, as the general feeling is that Brampton Civic Hospital is inadequately sized to handle the volume of patients it receives from Brampton and nearby smaller communities every year. However, the Central West Local Health Integration network has recommended that it become an outpatient service facility that would accommodate mental health services, cancer screening, and day surgery.
But don't let all that stop you from looking at homes in Brampton because in the meantime Brampton Civic Hospital's doors remain open. With 2,750 staff members, including 425 doctors and 900 nurses, it is equipped to handle more than 80,000 emergency patients per year. Brampton Civic is equipped to provide diagnostic imaging testing, cancer care, general surgery, and addictions and mental health services in addition to traditional ambulatory care.
Additionally, there are several family practices in Brampton accepting patients with non-urgent care issues. These practices are augmented by dental health practices and alternative medicine practices with fancy business card designs to give Brampton residents the best in care options. Brampton also doesn't forget its non-human residents, as several clinics and animal hospitals exist to provide care for ailing animals of all sizes and breeds.
