Neighbourhoods

Markham may be the most populous town in Canada but it is still primarily a town, and a suburban town associated with Toronto, at that. As such the vast majority of the housing in Markham is what an Oakville real estate agent would say is geared toward the suburban family where the parents commute to an office in Toronto to work and the 2.5 children walk down the street to the local school to learn and play after-school sports.

Markham has many neighborhoods of varying ages (most of which have been built since the housing boom in the 1980s) that feature similar houses with similar lawns arrayed along winding streets with signs out front identifying them. This is a lot like Georgetown, Ontario real estate. Many of these neighborhoods or sub-communities used to be separate villages and still retain the signage identifying them as such. Most of them have quaint names like Cedar Grove, Angus Glen, and Legacy and are largely composed of single-family housing. Some of the larger former towns like Thornhill and Unionville are still generally thought of as separate communities despite technically being part of Markham.

More pre-planned suburban neighborhoods are being built all the time, eating up what little of farmland remains from the original Markham and creating an insatiable demand for modern bathroom vanities. What is left can be found in North Markham, but likely not for long. Development in that area will soon be stopped though, because of the Oak Ridges Moraine, which is an environmentally sensitive area and will most likely not be allowed to be developed.

There are some rental properties, mostly apartments and condominiums, in Markham and there are more going up all the time because of the demand for housing, though not as fast as Lawrence Park homes for sale. These neighborhoods are usually located near transportation hubs into Toronto such as along the highway and near the GO train stations. Some can also be found in downtown Markham.
